Even though its very earliest design dates back well over 100 years, the M1917 Browning and its subsequent models have generally been regarded as the best and most reliable machine gun of all time, seeing use in many armies from 1918 to the 1990s, a remarkably long life span.

The Browning, like any piece of good machinery was - if not properly maintained, certainly not trouble free. Certain parts were prone to malfunctions and careful inspection was needed to identify them so they could be replaced.

Various countries, namely Belgium, England, Israel and Sweden, and also Colt Firearms in their commercial models made improvements to the Browning, but these were not incorporated into the U.S. Military version.

Yet, the Browning as supplied to the Armed Forces, even though lacking the various improvements, was an excellent gun. However, to be really efficient the gunners had to be very familiar with it. Therefore, it is neccessary for a gunner to have knowledge of the various produres to keep a Browning " In Action" and this knowledge is what this book is intended to provide.
